The Bunker, located at No.3 Zhang Zizhong Road, Beijing, was originally the underground facility built by General Yasuji Okamura, commander-in-chief of the Japanese occupying force in Northern China during the Second Sino-Japanese War. The architectural compound that The Bunker belongs to has witnessed the changes in historical periods of modern China: Constructed in 1906, this architectural compound once housed the offices of the Qing Government’s Navy and Army until it became the Duan Qirui’s administrative office of the Nationalist government in 1924; In 1926, the March 18 Massacre occurred here; After the founding of the government of CPC in 1949, it has been used by People's University of China. Since 2017, as part of the historic site, The Bunker opens as an exhibition space for experimental art.

Mission Statement:

The Bunker is an independent non-profit contemporary art platform that aims to nurture experimental, conceptual, site-sensitive work, as well as work that departs from an artist’s own established practice. Art practitioners are invited to submit exhibition proposals which are selected by The Bunker’s artistic committee.

1. Research and publication of The Bunker’s exhibition projects

2. Organize discussions and workshops around themes relating to The Bunker’s program

3. Create exhibition projects specific to The Bunker

4. Establish an archive of materials relating to The Bunker’s activities

空间简介

掩体空间位于北京东城区张自忠路3号院,是日据时期驻华北日军司令冈村宁次修筑的地下工事。空间所在的建筑群落见证了近代中国各历史时期的变迁——该建筑群落始建于1906年——清政府海军部和陆军部曾在此办公;1924年,段祺瑞在此任中华民国临时执政;1926年三·一八惨案在此发生;1949年建政后这里又长期作为中国人民大学校址使用,自2017年起,作为历史遗迹的一部分,掩体开启为实验艺术的展览空间。

展览及研究方向

作为非营利性机构,掩体空间本着开放之态度、独立之精神,力求选取具有空间针对性、实验性、观念性的艺术方案,以及对自身固有的艺术体系构成挑战的方案予以呈现并加以研究。

1)空间项目的研究和出版;

2)策划主题论坛与工作坊项目;

3)针对掩体空间的特定展览;

4)建立空间档案与文献库;
